Larry Koman came to Bakersfield in 1994 to oversee construction of a $51 million Corporate Regional Office building. At the time, it was the largest privately owned project under construction in California.
Koman has been a licensed California contractor since 1984. His career began in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he built a number of homes before turning his attention to remodeling and tenant improvement projects for redevelopment companies. Over the years, his projects ranged from site development for a 32 unit subdivision to restoration of a 30-unit historical resident to rehabilitation and redevelopment of commercial and multiunit residential properties in the Oakland redevelopment district. His accounts included Coldwell Banker, Hewlett Packard, Apple Computers, Intel, Cornish and Carey Real Estate, City of San Jose, City of Santa Clara, Property Services Corporation, and Oakwood Apartments.
In 1987, he became a senior manager for a Fortune 500 company, which set him on a path toward Bakersfield. Once he arrived, Koman knew he was here to stay and he wanted to be a part of the city's future. He became an active member of the community. He participated on the Mayor's Economic Development Committee, served on the airport steering committee to review plans for new terminal facilities, and has been a board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Bakersfield since 1999. In 2006, Mr. Koman was appointed to the Board of the Bakersfield Redevelopment agency where he is serving a four year term. .
Creating homes for families is important to Koman. While large commercial projects offer challenging work, he says "I've wanted to build good quality homes again for a long time, and I wanted to build in good neighborhoods with other quality builders."
